Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called for regular trilateral security talks involving North Korea, China and Russia. This proposal comes in response to what he says are dangerous policies pursued by the United States, Japan and South Korea.
Lavrov’s visit to Pyongyang came earlier this month The United States, Japan and South Korea conducted joint naval exercises for the first time in seven years. The training simulated the seizure of smuggling vessels and was conducted in international waters on the southern part of South Korea’s Jeju Island. The United States participated in the exercises on an aircraft carrier.
Lavrov expressed concern about the increasing military activities of the United States, Japan and South Korea in the region. He also expressed concern about Washington’s plans to move strategic infrastructure, including nuclear components, there. The Foreign Minister said he opposed this “unconstructive and dangerous policy.”.
The Russian Foreign Minister’s visit comes as part of a series of high-level meetings between Moscow and North Korea that began last July. Sergey Shoigu Defense Minister visited Pyongyang.
