The layoffs are the latest move by Lidl to right-size its U.S. operations as it struggles to make profits while rival Aldi hits the pace.
“Lidl US has made the difficult decision to eliminate corporate roles across three functions within the company. While this was never an easy decision, we believe it is the right one for the company,” a company spokesperson wrote.
A Lidl U.S. spokesperson declined to say how many workers were affected. LinkedIn posts from several laid-off employees suggested the layoffs were part of a company restructuring plan. A marketing manager who was laid off in LinkedIn Video Graphic designers, content producers, social media managers and IT workers were among those being laid off, it was reported Thursday.
The spokesperson said Lidl workers laid off in the US will receive severance packages and career transition support.
The job cuts last year came as Lidl US was restructuring the company and aiming to bolster its financial health.
Lidl opened its first U.S. stores in 2017, but has struggled to get its foot in the door and grow in the U.S. Meanwhile, rival Aldi, which The United States entered in the 1970s.It continues to rapidly expand its store fleet, with plans to open 800 additional stores by the end of 2028.
