Half a million workers are already missing from Romania, and the authorities are trying to replace them with workers from Nepal, India and Pakistan. Deutsche Welle report.

“Nothing will work without foreign workers,” complained a Romanian hotel owner who had not been able to find workers for years. Since joining the European Union in 2007, hundreds of thousands of Romanian citizens have tried their luck in Western Europe, and today at least half a million workers are missing in the fields of catering, construction and healthcare.

The Bucharest government is now going to replace them with Asian immigrants, recruited mainly in Nepal, India and Pakistan. Expats sometimes run into unexpected problems, for example, Udayanga from Sri Lanka was hired as a chef in a hotel without having eaten European food before.
