London has been dethroned, and it no longer has the best pub in the world

The 2022 ranking of the fifty best bars in the world has been published, and surprisingly, since the list was established in 2009, this year, for the first time, not a bar from London or New York ranked first, but a bar from Barcelona, CNN reports. The list was compiled based on the votes of 650 bartenders, bar owners, beverage critics, and cocktail experts.

The list of restaurants included in the list of the 50 best bars in Barcelona was announced on Tuesday evening – not by chance, three of the ten best bars are also located in the Catalan capital. The ceremony was held outside of London for the first time.

This year’s winners, Malka Paradiso, Giacomo Gianotti and Margherita Sader, said: “Winning is a great honor for us, but also a great responsibility. We will work hard to win the title of Best Bar while adhering to our principles.”

Paradiso finished only third in 2021, reaching the top of the podium this year. On the other hand, The Connaught Bar in London has been a hit: while it held the top spot on the list for the past two years, this year it has slipped to number eight. At the same time, the UK doesn’t have to be shy: five London bars made it to the list, and Tayēr + Elementary in the British capital also managed to hold onto its second spot.

Sips, also from Barcelona, made the biggest jump, moving up from 37th last year to third on the podium this year.

More interesting things from the list:

  • A total of four Spanish bars have reached the Top 50, with Salmon Guru in Madrid at number 15.
  • Italy also featured strongly, with bars in Rome, Florence, Milan and Naples high on the list. Newcomer L’Antiquario Napoli finished 46th, with Napoli and Florence entering the top 50 for the first time.
  • The Portuguese capital, Lisbon, also appeared on the list for the first time.
  • Six New York bars are on the list (two of them are in the top ten), making it the best performing non-European city.
  • In sixth place, New York’s Double Chicken Please (which also won the title of Strongest Debut) was described by experts as serving “almost Michelin-starred cuisine,” a clear indication that the best pubs are also increasingly focusing on restaurant-quality service.
  • Mexico City is another North American cocktail capital, with four bars in the top fifty, including Licorería Limantour in fourth place and winner of Best Bar in North America.
  • Alquímico in Cartagena was named the best bar in South America, ranking 10th on the list. In addition, three bars in Buenos Aires and one in Lima also made the first list.
  • In twelfth place, Jigger & Pony from Singapore won the title of Best Bar in Asia.
  • There are three Dubai bars in the top 50, with Zuma taking the 38th place on the list as the best bar in the Middle East and Africa. Zuma won the award for the third year in a row.
  • The best bar in Australia is Sydney’s Maybe Sammy team, who are ranked 29th.
