The Redmond tech giant is getting a lot of new IP addresses, many of which haven’t been used lately.
With Activision Blizzard King, Microsoft can significantly expand its content portfolio, including many older series and games. Activision is mainly known for Call of Duty, but in the past the company has released so much more, from skateboarding games to platformers to open-world crime/law enforcement titles. The last category is inspired by Grand Theft Auto. If Microsoft’s $68.7 billion deal closes, that doesn’t automatically mean old games will be revived, just that there might be a chance for them.
On Reddit, four games were named that the audience would like to see: True Crime: Streets of LA, True Crime: New York City, Tony Hawk’s Underground, Blur. There are many who want to be able to play it on the Xbox Series with retroactive support, and others who want to remake and remake it. The problem with supporting older games is that Microsoft stopped expanding the catalog, but Activision seems to have given up on the older Tony Hawk games, even though Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 was fine… But Tony Hawk admitted that Vicarious Visions was planning to re-release the third and fourth installments, but the studio eventually merged with Blizzard, so there’s no chance of that.
But there is also Guitar Hero and Skylanders. In the case of the latter, there were already rumors of a return, but this time without the game’s physical characters (this was the main component, as was the case with Disney Infinity titles at the time). True Crime is also questionable, but in 2012 we already saw a similar game, which eventually started from this IP. It was Sleeping Dogs, but after Activision dropped the project, a new IP was born that was eventually published by Square Enix.
So there would be an option for Microsoft, but after the acquisition of ZeniMax Media, Bethesda’s old IPs didn’t become Xbox exclusives. Until now.
