Marco: It's a tragedy that Sainz, who is having his best season, doesn't have a place in a leading team

Red Bull's advisor sees it as a contradiction that while Carlos Sainz is having a great season this year, he is being pushed away from the front straight away.

Last week, it became clear that Carlos Sainz will continue as a Williams driver from 2025. The Spaniard genuinely believes they can move up with the British team, which has seen better days, but in the short term, he can also realise that this will be a step backwards for him compared to the Ferrari years.

While Sainz has been able to regularly celebrate wins and podiums with the Scuderia in recent seasons, it is not normal for Williams to be achieving points-scoring results at the moment, and team principal James Vowles has already indicated that they do not expect a radical change in this regard in the short term.

At the start of the year, Sainz could have been hoping for a place at Red Bull, with questions raised about the future of Max Verstappen and then Sergio Perez. However, his coaching team quickly gave him the basket case and indicated they did not want another Verstappen-Sainz duel after a stormy Toro Rosso season in 2015. Meanwhile, at Mercedes, Sainz could be seen as a sort of backup.

Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko regrets putting their former talent in such a position.

“Of course it is a pity that he had his best season at Ferrari and could not get a place in a big team.”

“His choice of Williams is understandable. After all, what are his options? You certainly won’t play Audi next year if you want to succeed. Alpine doesn’t even know if they will have a Mercedes engine in 2025 or only in 2026. I say that this is the best solution in this case.” – Red Bull advisor looks into Sainz's situation.

In the long run, he added, the vision Williams presents doesn't look so bad. “He had to choose Williams and there he would have a powerful engine. He believes there is a clause in his contract that allows him to leave if he receives an offer from a team in a clearly better position.” He pointed out the common items.

Incidentally, James Vowles denied that Sainz has the opportunity to withdraw from the agreement they have just concluded if Mercedes, for example, continues to need his services. Williams boss also indicated that they are not interested in Andrea Kimi Antonelli, even if he could offer him to them in exchange for Sainz's Mercedes.
