Meet King Henry Prairie View A&M University Alum and Music Producer of Phase One “City Boii”

Meet Producer King Henry, “From elementary school all the way through college, music has always been a huge part of my life. I used to play my aunt and my pops’ records in my grandmother’s basement in the summers. Original pressings of Motown greats. Jackson 5, The Temptations. Those vinyls, I believe, unlocked a passion. As I got older it just grew into an obsession. New and old music. I would make CD mixes with John Coltrane, N.E.R.D, and Master P. Just chaos.” – King Henry

Inspired by Quincy Jones, Roy Ayers, The Neptune’s, Kanye West, George Clinton, Just Blaze, Michael Jackson. King Henry started making beats during his sophomore semester at Prairie View A&M in 2003, which progressed to producing in 2010. King Henry’s Sound is HipSoul, soulful hip hop and R&B with a hint of Trap. ” Funny thing, I coined the term trapSOUL on an Instagram post probably 2 years prior to Bryson Tiller coming out. I’m positive there’s no relation, but I learned a lesson to never underestimate the power of an idea.”

The power of an idea that you feed, becomes your passion and that can impact the world in ways you’ve never even imagined. “I want kids like me to pull my music out 50 years from now and be inspired. I’m all for a quick buck for a one-hit wonder, but changing how people see and hear music would complete my life. I want to make my kids and family proud. Simple as that.”- King Henry. The legacy you leave behind by doing what you love and are passionate about will indeed inspire and touch people daily.

When pursuing your passion there can be a lot of ups and downs but pushing through your struggles will make your effort worthwhile. “Because of technology everyone can call themselves and DJ or a producer. So the people you meet in the industry are very jaded towards new unproven acts or talent. Finding ways to stand out can be tough, but you must have a will beyond the norm to ignore the failures and to work until it’s a success.” – King Henry. If you give up just because you failed once or twice are you really passionate about the things you are trying to achieve in life it may take you 10 years to equal someone else’s one year of success, but that does not mean you weren’t meant to blaze the path you’re on, it simply means that what’s destined for you will come when the time is right.

There is always that one moment that makes everything click, The moment where you say to yourself this is exactly what I am supposed to be doing I am where I’m supposed to be and I shall continue on this path. For King Henry it was the moment where the people he looked up to become his competition without him knowing, good health competition is great the competitive spirit can be used as fuel for your passion and ultimately drives your to be better and produce greatness.

What’s the production/recording process like?
– “I usually make my tracks alone, with additions from musicians I have 100% trust and respect for with a similar drive and passion. I’ll randomly send beat to artists I think fit the sounds. I give them about a week to marinate on it then we schedule the studio session. Done and Done.”

Advice from King Henry: Don’t stop. People always say it can’t be done until you do it.
