Developers can keep the entire revenue during the exclusivity period.
The Gamescom Game Show brought bad news to PC gamers who swear by Steam, and the Epic Games Store may get more temporary exclusives in the future. As part of the newly announced First Run initiative, game developers of all sizes can easily sign an exclusive six-month agreement with the Epic Games Store, during which they can keep 100 percent of their game revenue.
The agreement only applies to the PC versions of their games, and despite the contract, they can publish their products on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and other platforms as usual. After the six-month exclusivity period ends, the store’s default revenue sharing ratio of 12-88 percent will come into effect.
According to Tim Sweeney, founder of Epic Games, it’s a very simple business: his company’s digital game store can acquire new paying users through exclusive offers, and it helps game developers keep revenue entirely from sales.
