Netflix/Everett Collection
It's not unusual for 'Bridgerton' cast members to strip naked on screen, with the Netflix series quickly gaining a reputation for its love scenes after it premiered on the streamer in 2020. Ahead of the upcoming third season, actress Nicola Coughlan has revealed her negotiations . With Netflix and Shondaland, producing an alternate cut of episodes that didn't include those more mature scenes – for the express purpose of showing them to her parents.
Coughlan's comments came during an interview on SiriusXM hits 1 After the hosts brought up a rumor that she requested a “PG version”. The actress says she went so far as to get language regarding an alternate cut, and a TV-MA rating downgrade, included in her contract.
“It's literally written into my contract. People think I'm saying it as a joke,” Coughlan said. “I just don't want to… We were raised Irish Catholic. This is not the way we feel.
Coghlan went on to describe her mother's first impression of the series, which sets the dress code for episodes very quickly.
“When I first watched 'Bridgerton,' you didn't know it was going to be raunchy. And then you get a bottom — Jonathan Bailey's beautiful bottom — about two minutes into the first episode ever. And she's like, 'What is this?' “But now she thinks it's really cool and funny,” Coghlan recalls.
After appearing during the first two seasons of “Bridgerton,” Coughlan will play a more prominent role in season three, as Bridgerton's Colin, played by Luke Newton, woos Lady Penelope.
Netflix will premiere the third season of “Bridgerton” in two parts later this year, the first on May 16 and the second on June 13.
