Ohio State’s game # 4 with Illinois scheduled for Saturday has been canceled, programs announced Friday night, less than 14 hours before kick-off. The decision to cancel the game, which had been scheduled for noon EST, came after that Ohio State Coach Ryan Day tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this week.
Day’s positive test came as part of “an increase in the number of positive tests this week,” according to a statement from Ohio.
Ohio State Coach’s assistant head coach Larry Johnson was scheduled to work as interim coach for Buckeyes on Saturday before the match was canceled.
The cancellation means Ohio will only play seven games, at most, this season before College Football Playoff is announced on December 20. If the Buckeyes game is canceled, they will not be eligible for the Big Ten title, according to league protocols.
The COVID-19 outbreak in Ohio contrasts with the program’s previous claim that “nearly 0% positive since August 11.” Before the game was canceled, Buckeyes’ team changed their travel plans due to positive tests. Instead of flying to Illinois on Friday, the team planned to fly on Saturday morning, arriving just hours before the flight took off.
