Spokesperson Rishi Sunak said the investigation is related to the stake of the Prime Minister Akshata Murthy’s wife in a childcare company. The opposition Liberal Democrats had demanded an investigation after the media coverage of the incident. Accordingly, Murthy was a shareholder in a childcare company that would also receive budget funding. The investigation began on April 13.

If the investigation finds that Snak has violated the Code of Conduct, the Commissioner may require him to acknowledge the mistake and apologize, as well as take steps to avoid future mistakes. In extreme cases, the case may be referred to a committee, which is entitled to impose other penalties, such as, for example, withholding of pay or suspension for a fixed term from serving the House of Commons.
