Kasi Lemmons is producing a film about the life of one of the greatest R&B pop singers of all time based on a screenplay by Anthony McCarten. i want to dance with someone It attempts to capture the essence of Whitney's art: the incredible talent, the stamina, the will, and the overwhelming, life-giving power of singing.
Houston was rightfully called The Voice. He was already a soloist in a local gospel choir at the age of 11, and of course genetics worked too, as his mother was soul singer Cissy Houston and his godmother was Aretha Franklin. The film only talks about the early years in general, but it's clear that the mother held her daughter tight when it came to singing.
It is a work that focuses on the music (the singer's iconic songs are played), where the focus is on the singer's career progress rather than the events of her private life. It does not change reality, nor does it hide Whitney's dark moments, yet they are not focused on in the film.
Naomi Ackie, if not quite resembling the soul singer, perfectly captured the singer's facial expressions and signature hand gestures.
Clive Davis, the film's producer, said in an interview:
We were so impressed that Whitney's character was captured.
The producer also said that a documentary and a TV movie had already been made about Whitney, but neither had captured the singer's spirit, humility, and musical attitude. This film was made to replace them.
