OpenAI executives responded to Elon Musk, using the billionaire's emails in a blog post to show that Musk supports the company's plans to become a profitable business. Musk directly insisted on raising “billions” in capital in order to compete with Google.
We're sad that we've come this far with someone we admired so much — someone who inspired us to reach higher, then told us we'd fail, started a competitor, and then sued us when we started making meaningful progress toward OpenAI's mission without him.
The company wrote in a blog post co-authored by several OpenAI founders, including Altman, Brockman, and Ilya Sutskever.
They also released emails Musk sent to employees at the company, which show the billionaire supports OpenAI's fundraising efforts. “This needs billions per year immediately, or forget about it,” Musk wrote in one email, according to OpenAI.
As a nonprofit, OpenAI has raised just under $45 million from Musk and more than $90 million from other donors, according to the blog post. The emails reveal that Musk encouraged the company to raise money more ambitiously. According to OpenAI, Altman and Brockman initially planned to raise $100 million, but Musk declined, saying the number should be higher.
According to OpenAI, Elon Musk has not always been opposed to corporate influence in OpenAI. They said it is musk I tried to make OpenAI part of Tesla.
Musk claims in his lawsuit that the startup's close ties to Microsoft undermined OpenAI's original mission of creating open source technology free of undue corporate influence. “To this day, OpenAI Inc.’s website claims that its founding charter states that artificial general intelligence (AGI) will benefit all of humanity,” the lawsuit said.
But in reality, OpenAI has become a de facto closed-source subsidiary of the world's largest technology company (Microsoft).
– Musk wrote that OpenAI is suing for breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, and unfair trade practices, among other claims.
