OpenAI's CTO is leaving

CNBC reports that Moratti is the latest in a string of high-profile executives to leave the startup.

Moratti explained his departure in this way,

Because I want to create time and space for my own discoveries.

“At this time, my primary focus is to do everything I can to ensure a smooth transition and maintain the momentum we have built,” he added.

“After much thought, I have made the difficult decision to leave OpenAI,” he wrote in a letter to the company, also posted on X, adding: “There is never a perfect time to say goodbye to a place we hold dear. This moment feels right.”

Regarding OpenAI, there has been a series of news about people leaving senior positions in recent months. OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever and former chief security officer Jan Lycke announced their departures in May, CNBC reported. Co-founder John Schulman said last month he was leaving for rival Anthropic.

As you may know, OpenAI’s board abruptly fired CEO Sam Altman last November and appointed Moratti as interim CEO. Nearly all OpenAI employees subsequently signed an open letter indicating they were leaving the company in response to the board’s action. Days later, Altman returned to the company, and Moratti resumed his previous role as CTO. Board members Helen Toner and Tasha McCauley stepped down. Sutskever was removed from the board.
