Pacific Series IV: Canada beat New Zealand for the first time

Canada recorded its first ever win over New Zealand to move above them and move into second place behind England in the Women's Rugby World Rankings.

The Black Ferns' defeat in the 18th meeting between the two sides saw them drop out of the top two in the rankings for the first time.

Fancy Bermudez scored twice – once in each half – in the 22-21 win as Canada claimed the Pacific Four Series title in Christchurch despite Olivia Apps' miss on the half-volley with 10 minutes left.

New Zealand took an early lead through Katelyn Fahakulu and the winger scored again in the 23rd minute to extend her team's lead to 14-3, with Ruahi Dimant scoring both goals.

But Bermudez ensured her side were only 14-10 down at half-time before McKinley Hunt put them ahead with a try early in the second half and Bermudez crossed again in the 60th minute.

Patricia Malibu's effort led to a nervy finish but Canada held on for the famous win, with captain Sophie De Guidi praising her team.

“Defensively, the position we kept them in before halftime was a big moment for us,” she said. “I'm really proud of the work we did during the collapse.

“We have been knocking on the door and pushing to make a statement on the world stage for Canada for some time.”
