British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been fined, reports A.J BBC. On Thursday, Sunak posted a video on Instagram promoting his government’s actions. The video was filmed in the back seat of a moving car and the prime minister is clearly not wearing a seatbelt.
The video went viral on British social media on Thursday night, and Lancashire County Police (Sunak was in the northern county of England when the video was filmed) launched an investigation. Inquiry completed within 24 hours.
Lancashire Police Friday night announce, that the “42-year-old Londoner” will be ordered to pay a fine after he “failed to wear a seat belt while a passenger in a moving car in Lancashire, according to a video circulating on social media.” The exact amount of the fine has not been announced, it could range from 100 to 500 pounds (45,000 to 225,000 forints).
The British Prime Minister’s office issued a statement saying that Sunak “fully admits he made a mistake and apologises.” According to the statement, the prime minister respects the police’s decision and will pay the fine imposed on him.
With Thursday’s crime, Sun became the second prime minister in British history to be arrested and punished for breaking the law during his tenure. The first was Boris Johnson, who received a symbolic fine in April 2022 for violating anti-gathering regulations introduced by his government to curb Covid at an illegal Downing Street gathering. Rishi Sunak was also convicted of the same offense last year, making this his second fine in the past year.
