It has always been rumored that Rockstar Games is not only working on behind-the-scenes versions of GTA 5 (na and GTA 6), but also revamping old crime simulator episodes. Of course, the team didn’t confirm anything officially as usual, but now one of Kotaku’s most reliable sources has revealed what parts the studio is remaking.
The informant previously revealed content for GTA Online and Red Dead Redemption 2 coming to Kotaku weeks or even months in advance, so if it’s not official, we can start to hope. Rockstar is said to be working on three revamped versions simultaneously, so we get Remastered versions of Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. Plus, it won’t be long, with Rockstar planning a premiere this fall, and Nintendo Switch owners can also be thrilled with the arrival of ports on the Japanese manufacturer’s console.
According to the news, Rocktar did not copy the work, ported the new versions to the Unreal Engine, and the appearance will be as if we mixed the old graphics with the new. The source had already seen the games in action, and said that they looked like brutally modified versions of the originals. The developers did not leave the menu systems as is, but kept their classic style. It is not yet known how far Rockstar has come to the gameplay, it turns out that they tried to stay as faithful to the original games as possible.
The source also confirmed that the lion’s share of the renovation work was done by Scottish Rockstar Dundee, a newly formed team within the company. The Ranger was bought by Rockstar not so long ago, and his name probably wouldn’t be known: they were the Ruffian Games who worked on the Master Chief Collection as well as the second and third parts of Crackdown before they became Rockstar Dundee. Another source also reported that the new studio has helped not only make the remasters work, but also the next generation GTA 5, which will arrive in November.
If everything is correct, the games will be available in one package and number only, although you don’t get poisoned until we get official information! Not least because Rockstar himself has tweaked his reconfiguration plans several times. First, the bundle was for nextgen customers GTA 5 and GTA Online, as a bonus, then the coronavirus pandemic came and things changed. Rockstar then planned to release the redesigned bundle this year, but it didn’t work out, and now it will be released in late October or early November on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, PC, Stadia and mobile platforms. True, as of the current situation, it is not excluded that PC and mobile ports will decline by 2022 because console versions will take precedence.
Another good news is that if this revamped package is well received by the public, it is also possible to renew additional Rockstar games, such as Red Dead Redemption. The studio is taking it so seriously, according to the source, that we get fewer updates for Red Dead Online because a large portion of the teams helped with development.
