Samsung is developing a 432-megapixel camera in the subsequent Galaxy S Ultra phone

We have already read news that Samsung is not satisfied with 200 MP cameras, but is preparing with sensors with a much higher resolution, and now new details have arrived about these new solutions.

Samsung patented the “Hexa²Pixel” technology last summer, and the name clearly indicates that it is a 36:1 pixel combination (hexa means 6, and its square is 36). Current 108MP cameras use 9:1 fusion, meaning they combine pixels by 9 (3×3 pixels become one), and 200MP sensors use 16:1 fusion, which is where 4×4 pixels melt together. The final resolution in these cases is 12 or 12.5 megapixels, that is, it is easy to calculate that if the pixels (6 x 6 pixels) are added by 36, the original resolution of the sensor will be 432 or 450 megapixels.

A leaker has now provided more specific information than previously, announcing that Samsung is working on preparing a new series of sensors, which it will call “HW.” In the first round, two of these sensors could come, the HW1 and HW2, both with a resolution of 432 megapixels and a size of approximately 1 inch. HW1 will be 1/1.05″ to be precise, so the actual size of each pixel is 0.56 µm, and HW2 will be 1/1.07″ (with 0.5 µm pixels).

It was also revealed that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 still has a 50MP GN3 sensor, while the Z Fold 7 switches to a 200MP ISOCELL HP5 sensor. As for the 432-megapixel HW-branded solutions, they will likely end up in one of the newer Galaxy S Ultra mobiles. If the Galaxy S24 Ultra arrives next year, the 200-megapixel sensor will still be there, so the Galaxy S25 Ultra could get such a super-resolution camera as soon as possible.
