Meta announced in 2021 that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas would be ported to Meta Quest 2.
Then it was just a simple announcement and nothing more. They didn’t even show a random image of it, and after the announcement, even Mark Zuckerberg seemed to forget about CJ’s VR mod. UploadVR asked Meta about the project in 2023, but the company declined to respond. This was already pretty silly, but now the MetaQuestVR YouTube channel has announced official information in the comments section of the first video embedded below about the project that was announced almost three years ago (the announcement came in late October 2021).
“GTA: San Andreas has been postponed indefinitely while we both focus on other projects. We look forward to working with our friends at Rockstar in the future,” Meta confirmed to IGN. “The indefinite suspension doesn’t mean development has stopped, but the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake, which was postponed indefinitely in 2022, did the same. Paradox’s Sims clone, Life by You, did so two weeks before its early access release, and then was cancelled.”
This situation also shows that the state of virtual reality is not perfect. According to the latest Steam hardware survey, only 2% of respondents own a VR headset, and that number hasn’t changed significantly in years, even with Valve making its own headset (Valve Index). And while VR games and ports are in the works (Hitman 2 Reloaded VR, the new Batman: Arkham, the four VR ports that hit the news yesterday…), Meta Reality Labs’ VR division is burning money on both hands, which is why they shut down Ready at Dawn, the developer of Lone Echo. (Order: 1886…)
So the VR version of CJ is probably about that.
