Saad Al-Barrak, Kuwait’s oil minister, said Kuwait and Saudi Arabia claim exclusive rights to the Dorra gas field in the Persian Gulf, and urged Iran to first support its claim to the field by drawing its maritime borders.
Iran has previously demanded a share in the Dorra field, describing the Saudi-Kuwaiti agreement signed last year regarding its development as “illegal”. However, Al-Barrak claims that the Dorra field was until now the exclusive right of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. He insists that any claimant must initiate the establishment of borders. If they really have a right, they should exercise it in accordance with international legal standards.
Al-Barrak’s remarks echo those of Saudi Arabia last week. The Kingdom announced that it and Kuwait are the only owners of natural resources in the “common area” on the sea in the Gulf.
Saudi Arabia also renewed its call on Iran to start negotiations with Riyadh and Kuwait regarding the delineation of the eastern borders of this region.
