Science and responsibility in protecting biodiversity

The need to monitor biodiversity, modern methods of data collection, the social and economic use of information obtained through monitoring, as well as the launch of the University of Debrecen's environmental monitoring system and the current stages of work were also discussed at the first meeting. Biodiversity Conference.

The Center for Biodiversity, Water Management and Climate Change established in 2023 at the University of Debrecen can play a crucial role in the climate strategy of the future, through which specialists will be able to provide responsible and credible answers to emerging environmental questions. At the international scientific conference organized today, Friday, at the DAB headquarters of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, specialists addressed the current and future challenges of biodiversity.

The University of Debrecen has been at the forefront of environmental, nature conservation and biodiversity research in recent decades. The Center for Biodiversity, Water Management and Climate Change also seeks to achieve this noble mission. Within the framework of the environmental control system being developed in Debrecen, the primary task is to monitor biodiversity. The purpose of the conference is also for specialists to discuss the theoretical and practical background and development of observation and social use of the information obtained. He said that biodiversity can only be preserved through the use of data obtained with scientific development, and knowledge can open new horizons and strengthen commitment to a sustainable urban future. gyorgy kosa, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Istvan University Foundation Istvan Debrecen, which manages the University of Debrecen.

In his speech, he stressed the university's commitment to protecting the environment for decades Zoltan BaxChancellor of the University of Debrecen, who also highlighted the forward-looking exemplary cooperation between the city and DE.

– The study of ecology and natural ecosystems has always been important at the University of Debrecen. In recent years we have discovered that this field needs to be dealt with more prominently and in a more focused and organized way, and for this reason the center was established as a result of the university's internal academic requirements and industrial development. City surveillance works as well. We are proud that we have been able to establish the Center for Biodiversity, Water Management and Climate Change, and that such cooperation with the city can develop. We are confident that the system will be perfect and will provide useful information for the operation of not only Debrecen, but also other settlements,” the advisor stressed.

Polish SzabolcsThe director of the Center for Biodiversity, Water Management and Climate Change at the University of Debrecen said: The construction of the monitoring system is progressing well, and the professional conference was organized largely to promote this work.

The center's mission is to monitor the city's biodiversity, and the framework for this will be provided by an environmental monitoring system, through which, in addition to biodiversity, soil, water and air will be tested. Biodiversity is burdened with a lot of uncertainty, and we want to dispel these doubts at the conference, looking for an answer on how to use the information gained in the field of municipal tasks and city management. The center's head said that the monitoring system and equipment purchase are currently being built, but a basic condition survey could also begin this year.

Gabriel Robert The university professor at the University of Pécs, deputy director of the DE Center for Biodiversity, Water Management and Climate Change, told Hirek.unideb.hu that biodiversity is decreasing all over the world, and the number of individuals living in nature has decreased significantly. So be careful not to let this happen in Debrecen.

Biodiversity research is a global agenda on which the future of humanity truly depends. No matter how the city grows, the biodiversity of the environment should remain at least at the level it currently is, but efforts must be made to create new hotspots. The conference presents what we are doing in Debrecen regarding biodiversity protection, as well as the results of regular surveys that started last year. All this can provide a basis for regular local monitoring, the Deputy Director emphasized.

Attend the event Akos Balazs Deputy Mayor, who believes that cooperation between the university and the city can achieve unique results in the field of biodiversity. He said, in cooperation with DE staff, they will prepare the operational protocol on which the monitoring system will operate with the requirements and scientific background.

At the First Biodiversity Conference, specialists were able to learn about, among other things, the operating principle and objectives of the Debrecen Environmental Monitoring System, the results of efforts related to the widespread introduction of biodiversity monitoring, and also heard about the measurement and modeling of changes in biodiversity.
