The University Research Grants Program was established in 2024 by the Hungarian Government as a continuation of the previous New National Excellence Programme. 464 applicants from the University of Debrecen applied for the invitation published in May this year, and 430 of them had officially correct and valid applications.

Professional evaluation was carried out by the faculties in the case of undergraduate and master's students, and in the case of doctoral students, doctoral candidates and postdoctoral fellows by doctoral councils and doctoral schools, based on the points system detailed in the call for applications and in the university regulations.

The commitment of the scholarship recipients was that during the academic year, under the supervision of their supervisor, they would independently carry out research activities in the teaching and researcher category, the results of which would be published and presented at the EKÖP Institutional Conference – he explained. The institutional coordinator of the university research grants program confirmed that it is also a mandatory condition in all categories that the winners contribute to the recruitment of the institution’s students and talent management.

The 265 winning applicants will receive a monthly scholarship of HUF 125,000, 150,000, 200,000 or 250,000 for one or two semesters.

The collaborative doctoral program announced within the framework of EKÖP supports students participating in doctoral training who carry out successful research activities at the university and who, in addition to their status as doctoral students, carry out research work outside the higher education institution, primarily in companies, promoting the practical use of their scientific results. In this case, the professional evaluation of applications was carried out by a committee of experts invited by the Academic Vice-Chancellor.

According to the supporting decision, 12 students will receive a KDP scholarship worth 400,000 HUF per month for 24-48 months. In addition to the winning applicants, the program also awards supervisors to the PhD students and company experts who assist in the research.
