SEGA is considering Sonic remakes and reboots

Reboots in the plural – It’s a bit hard to imagine how this should be interpreted, but there’s a good chance that SEGA’s boss is referring to rethinking spin-offs.

Yukio Sugino, President and Chief Operating Officer of SEGA, spoke about the blue hedgehog in an interview with Famitsu. This interview has been translated into English by VGC, in which Sugino confirmed that in addition to new games, remakes of old parts can be done, and reboots are also being considered, but they don’t feel that way about all their IPs, but rather So, you should pay attention to the fact that some IP will be more functional.

“Of course we have to do new things, but not all IPs are created equally for new releases and reboots. For each IP, we choose the appropriate method at the exact time. Sonic is Sega’s flagship IP, and besides new titles, we are also thinking about new ones. Reboot and remake,” Sugino said. Takashi Iizuka, Creative Director of Sonic, told VGC during the Summer Games Festival that the revival of Samba de Amigo could see the return of other series that have been neglected these days (Nights, Burning Rangers).

“I can’t say yes to anything right now. These days, I’m the creator in charge of Sonic the Hedgehog, so I’m completely focused on that side of the business. So I can’t speak for anyone else, but Sonic Team Japan employs a lot of people these days.” The days—they have more people than ever before. So maybe you’ll hear about these kinds of surnames in the future,” Iizuka said. Last year for Bloomberg, we also wrote about Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio getting a big budget reboot, and these would be the first titles of the Super Game initiative (SEGA’s development of AAA projects that connect many things with technology).

SEGA recently announced a new Sonic game, Sonic Superstars (4-player side-scrolling platformer), developed by Arzest. The head of this studio is the original creator of Sonic, Ohshima Naoto.
