Here’s a recent AP football story:
Sheffield United became the first Premier League team to sack their manager this season, with Paul Heckingbottom losing his job on Tuesday with the team in last place after 14 matches in their first season in the top flight.
The owner of the Saudi club, Prince Abdullah bin Musaed bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, took the unusual step of announcing Heckingbottom’s departure on a radio station, telling talkSPORT in Britain that Chris Wilder – the manager when Sheffield United were last in the league in 2020. -21 Season – He was reinstated for a second term in office.
The club then first announced Heckingbottom’s sacking, before issuing a separate statement shortly after confirming that Wilder had been signed to a contract until the summer of 2025. Wilder will be in charge of the Premier League clash against Liverpool on Wednesday.
Hackingbottom’s final game in charge was a 5-0 defeat to promoted Burnley on Saturday, which dropped Sheffield United to bottom place – where Burnley were at the start – and four points from safety.
Heckingbottom took charge in November 2021 and led the team to the Premier League this year, but has been hampered this season by the sale of key players such as Sander Berge and Elimane Ndiaye before the start of the season.
Heckingbottom appeared to allude to this after the Burnley match when he said the club was “making financial decisions rather than footballing decisions”.
Sheffield United CEO Stephen Pettis thanked Heckingbottom for his role in helping the club return to the Premier League.
“His professionalism and dedication have been a credit to the club and I am sure all United players have enjoyed a promotion-winning season,” Betis said in a club statement. He added: “However, after sliding to the bottom of the table and a number of disappointing results and performances, there is a feeling that change is needed to give the club a boost and every possible chance of remaining in the Premier League beyond this season.”
Wilder, a childhood Sheffield United fan and former player at the club, has coached at Championship sides Middlesbrough and Watford since leaving Bramall Lane in March 2021.
He led Sheffield United to the Premier League in 2019 and to ninth place in the 2019-20 season, during which they competed for European qualification. The team was relegated at the end of the following season.
Prince Abdullah said Wilder was “part of Sheffield United’s history.”
“The one thing I always like to do, not just in football but in all my work, is to maintain a good relationship with my former employees no matter how it ends,” he told talkSPORT. “I think you should get over it.
“Ultimately, we are all passionate about what we do and believe Chris is the right man for the job.”
It is unusual for the Premier League to reach early December without sacking a coach. Five coaches have been sacked at this stage of the season in the past two seasons in the Premier League.
