- At least nine retail brands have said they will close their U.S. stores in 2024, totaling 1,280 locations.
- Family Dollar is the largest chain on the list, and plans to close at least 600 stores this year.
- Others, such as Walmart and TJX, are closing a few stores while opening more.
Business Insider statistics from nine retail chain brands found that as many as 1,290 stores have closed or are scheduled to close across the United States in 2024.
The number is down significantly from previous years, including last year, when the collapse of Bed Bath & Beyond contributed to the closure of more than 2,800 locations.
Analysts at UBS believe the total number of retail store closures in the United States could reach 45,000 over the next five years, driven largely by smaller stores going out of business, even as larger companies like Walmart and Costco continue to operate. Target and Home Depot are expanding.
Topping this year's list is Dollar Tree-owned Family Dollar, which is set to close at least 600 locations, with more to come as leases expire.
Some companies, including Express and Foxtrot, are in dire financial straits. Other companies, like Walmart and TJX, have plans to expand with more stores than they are closing. Still others, such as Foot Locker and Macy's, change their strategies as shopping patterns change.
