Dr. Tamas Molnar, who holds a law degree from SZTE, has become a pioneer in the sport of water polo in the world. The three-time Olympic champion was elected Chairman of the FINA Water Polo Technical Committee (WPTC) at the official meeting of the 19th FINA World Championships.

The President of the International Aquatics Federation, Hussain Al-Musallam, personally congratulated him and wished him a good job after his appointment. Dr. Tamas Molnarwho became an internationally recognized athlete during his undergraduate years at Szeged. After receiving his law degree from the Faculty of Law and Government of the University of Szeged, he achieved more and more success not only in billiards, but also in professional diplomatic and sports circles. With his current appointment, the specialist from Szeged holds one of the most important positions in water polo.

– FINA, as the International Sports Federation that unites water sports in the world, administers the sports under its organization, or, if you like, its disciplines, such as swimming, diving or water polo in the professional sports sense, through its technical committees. Dr. Tamas Molnar is a lawyer, three-time Olympic World Champion, two-time European Champion in water polo, and two-time World Championship winner. He has ruled water polo since 2009. In 2015, he was elected President of the Arbitration Board of the Hungarian Water Polo Association. In January 2016, he was elected to the FINA Athletes’ Committee, and in May 2016 to the LEN Water Polo Committee. Since July 2017, he has been a member of the FINA Water Polo Committee. In July 2020, he was re-elected Vice-President of the Hungarian Water Polo Association, and has held this position ever since. He became a member of the Swimming Hall of Fame in 2015, and was awarded one of the highest government awards, the Middle Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary with a star after his third Olympic title. He did not part with the sport of water polo in his hometown, and is currently involved in managing the Szeged men’s water polo team.

Dr. Tamas Molnar is an active member of the alma mater club, which brings together SZTE alumni, which organized a family and sports weekend in June, where the former water polo player participated and presented prizes. Our long interview with him also reveals how he was able to juggle study and sports when he was a student at SZTE.
