Tactical magnet board: Tottenham – Manchester United 0-3
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side won with confidence at home against Tottenham Hotspur. Let’s see together what changes the manager and staff made to the match.
Dear reader! I’m glad you’re here again. I think after the match against Tottenham we were finally able to stand in front of the TV screen in a way that was clearly better than our beloved opponent’s team. I was feeling confident about United. Of course, this is when the question is asked: Is United good or the opponent was bad?! Let’s be positive, Manchester United outperformed Tottenham in almost every element of the game.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has had an amazingly difficult week. I often wondered this week what it would be like to work with him now with all this pressure on his shoulder?! It can’t be easy to get the team ready for the next cheer. There was a feeling that there would be a change from last week. Let’s also see how the team’s match against Tottenham has developed.
tactics
4-2-3-1 vs 3-5-2
Solskjaer pulled off an “unexpected” pull with the three defenders on the inside. Varane is amazingly important in defense. Lindelof also seemed calmer and more confident, in my opinion this 3-5-2 formation didn’t do well, it’s a small win that Sancho and Greenwood don’t really have a place in this squad, they could explode into the most attacking position.
In addition to defense, Cavani’s enthusiasm for rhythm and pace throughout this match is commendable. He should be a real role model for the younger generation. He showed up in all areas of the track yesterday. Next to him, Ronaldo also looked more defensive, locking back more than he caught the Spurs ball. The first line of defense was clearly more effective between the two of them than against Liverpool over the weekend with Ronaldo-Fernandes.
Earlier this week I saw a picture of the 3-5-2 lineup and frame, which I also saved to myself, wondering if it will come out over the weekend. You were right, he showed up in the field. Until then, I thought the framework would be a good fit for him, just fill it in with the game’s vision and content. I’d like to add a clue to the picture that McTominay would rather play midfield than me, despite the fact that he’s already played as a midfielder for MU. Unsurprisingly, Solskjaer was also expecting him midfield on the roster.
We get a little sense of the kind of heavy artillery Solskjaer has in the attacking position. Together, Ronado and Cavani will score a total of 1,220 goals in their careers.
practice
Already at the start of the match, the new old United squad appeared. 3-5-2 in attack, 5-3-2 in defense! The Wings/Wing Xu and AWB were in the match. We are mainly talking about two wing defenders, but both can also play the position of wing keeper with more kicks. You get used to this lineup, we might see it recently.
Among the defenders, Shaw was again in control, but there were no complaints about playing AWB. Although his passes are nowhere near as dangerous as his fellow left-back on the other side, the AWB has also done fieldwork.
The three-line assortment can have a major drawback in the long run. Also in this match, the pitch tilted to the left of United. This is due to Maguire’s more daring turn against Lindelöff, and Shaw is a much more offensive player than the AWB. Against Tottenham, 51% (!!!) of United started the attack on the left.
Perhaps the best example of MU’s fully conscious back-attack structure is the 25th minute events. The team tilted Spearst completely to the right with an elimination attempt. However, Lindelof returned the ball to De Gea and fired the Spanish goalkeeper Schutt, who was completely empty, without thinking. It circled around Fernandez, who Shaw would tease anyway.
Xu managed to enter the empty area. Fred immediately slid back to secure, while we were looking at Cavani as soon as he made his move to get Dyer out of his position. On the other hand, Fernandez could growl with impetus from the depths toward the gate. If the ball is more accurate, Shaw scores a goal.
Why did you analyze this ball output? Because it happened more than once in a match and I call it a scheme. United were clearly playing alongside Shaw, as it was all about seeing how Cavani was still a striker despite his 34-year-old age. With his moves alone, he was able to dismantle the defenses of the Spurs. And Fernandez’s strength comes from the depths. This is the case when the tactic increases the power of the players and does not eliminate them. It was great to see this in the game.
goals history
Ronaldo 0-1
Ladies and Gentlemen! Is there anything to add to this goal? I think we loved Manchester United because of goals like that. Classic hit.
Before the goal, I would like to draw attention to two things. The attack started when United pulled the Spurs defense to the right. So, when Shaw hit the left on a regular basis, Lucas belatedly reacted that he had to close to defending so much. McTominay balls are very accurate. Too bad his deep play isn’t real, if he can at least be effective up front, he could become a classic player.
The other fact is the risk United took 0-0. When Shaw started to snuggle a little, Maguire immediately came to his aid. But if we look at Lindelof’s position at the bottom of the picture, he’s also been pushed into the middle of the Spurs’ space. I’ve seen that kind of risk from United very rarely so far. The other question is whether this is optimal or perhaps actually too much. There is always a ‘but’ and an ‘if’ in football, what would have happened if the ball was lost? Faran alone in the back? We don’t know, the goal was amazing anyway. Fernandez’s ball and Ronaldo’s finish was also an experience. He was fascinated by both Portuguese magicians.
Ronaldo did not score
I would like to highlight this momentum because Cavani’s goal fell from an eerily similar situation. In the middle of the field this time, United started the fight with Tottenham. The crew didn’t finally lose the math battle. And after 0-1, counter-football could come, which we admit is still lying to United. In the second half, the ball was only 36% for the Red Devils. The (counter) attack started entirely from McTominay’s ball in the middle third of the field.
Cavani 0-2
Cavani’s goal was also born after a ball in midfield. This time Fernandes silenced a very annoying pass from Hogberg. Ronaldo and Cavani, who solved the task very routinely, arrived.
After 0-2 I think it totally felt for everyone that the match was over. The teams were already looking forward to the triple whistle. We thought United were in trouble, but what do they say at Tottenham? Their fans turned against the director. Half the field may have come back from Old Trafford against the pond, but there was certainly no such hostile atmosphere.
Rashford’s goal was a huge blow to the match. Tottenham closed the field without a shot. Before the goal again, United caused confusion in the midfield. Matic served very quietly against Rashford, who came out in defense of a completely disintegrated Spurs.
Summarize what you saw
I sat excitedly in front of the TV late on a Saturday afternoon. I was very curious about what Solskjaer would do in this sad situation. Happy to see the team’s position. The only question now is why wouldn’t this be the case again?! I was surprised that Tottenham couldn’t compete with Man United. It was as if Nuno wasn’t ready to change United’s structure. In the current situation, I feel the need for three inside defenders for this team. Maguire – Varane – Lindelöf helped each other throughout the match as written in the big book. And if this trio is able to work that way, stay in this lineup. Sancho needs to find a place in this team. I don’t want Van de Beek to be 2.0, so we waited 1.5 years for it to arrive.
What was amazing to me was that Pogba was completely absent from the team. Guys solved it without him. If it was decided on a match basis, I would say this machine plays without it. Of course, it is difficult to learn serious lessons from the match. Next in the Champions League is Atalanta, in addition to going. The win was very important to the league because it kept the team ahead.
And in the next round of the English Premier League, an urban derby will be held. The difference between the two Manchester teams is only three points. Will there be a six point match?!
Thanks for being here! thank you for reading! You can express your opinion in the comments below the article! What do you expect from the two important matches next week?
