Although the sunspot discovered by NASA appears alarmingly large, according to current scientists’ calculations, it will not cause any particular problems.

NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) space probe has discovered a giant spot on the sun. The structure took pictures of the star between December 2 and 4. The photos clearly show the massive size of the structure.

Sunspots are areas on the Sun where the magnetic field is up to 2,500 times stronger than anywhere else on its surface. Due to the strong magnetic field, the magnetic pressure increases, while the surrounding atmospheric pressure decreases, causing the temperature of the particular area to decrease. Thanks to this, the area appears darker in the image, which is why this phenomenon is called sunspots.

Despite the sunspot’s massive size, researchers from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration expected only minor and moderate geomagnetic storms as of December 4. In comparison, the July eruption was much stronger.
