Slovenian border controls on the Hungarian and Croatian borders went into effect at midnight, which will continue for at least ten days, MTI reported.
Fourteen checkpoints were established, two on the Hungarian border (Hosvalo, Bins) and twelve on the Croatian border. EU citizens can still use all border crossing points, while third-country nationals can only cross the border at these 14 points.
“We saw what happened in France and Belgium. Slovenia is no exception,” the Slovenian Interior Minister said about the background to the decision.
Two days ago, two Swedish football fans were shot dead by a man of Tunisian origin in Brussels. Abdul Salam Al-Kilani applied for asylum in Belgium in 2019. The Belgian authorities rejected his application in October 2020, and he was expelled from the country in March 2021. However, they could not deliver the decision to him because they did not know where he lived. The Belgian Minister of Justice resigned after what happened.
Recently, the Schengen system has begun to crack. For security reasons, Italy also imposed controls on its shared border with Slovenia as of Saturday, and the Slovaks had previously reinstated temporary border controls on the Hungarian border.
