19-year-old Holger Rohn defeated Ben Shelton, who is half a year his senior, in a major battle in the opening round of the $2.2 million (HUF800 million) men’s hard court tennis tournament in Acapulco.

The 41st-ranked American saved two points in the first and second sets against world number ten Holger Rohn, and reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open in January, on his first trip abroad.
Third seed Taylor Fritz, who plays in front of his fans, returned from a group deficit against 37-year-old compatriot John Isner, and 41-year-old Feliciano Lopez also reached the round of 16. The veteran Spaniard won his first match since July 2021, beating American Christopher Eubanks in two matches.
Nine Americans entered the field on the first day of the tournament in Mexico. Norway’s Casper Ruud, fourth in the world rankings, suffered a lot in the round of 16, as he could only defeat Argentine 342nd-ranked Guido Andreuzzi, who came from the qualifiers, in a battle that lasted two hours and 51 minutes.
