Lorenzo Sonego won his first singles match against Frances Tiafoe within two hours, then Taylor Fritz beat Lorenzo Musetti, so the pair decided on the next round.
The Italians, who lost without their two best players, Yannick Sinner and Matteo Berrettini due to injury, were the best, and therefore will meet the winner of the German-Canadian duel in the semi-finals on Saturday.
On the other hand, a Croatian-Australian duel for a place in the final will take place on Friday.
The doubles match will decide the quarter-final match between Germany and Canada 1-1.
In Thursday’s opening duel, Jan-Lennard Struff, ranked 152nd in the world, surprisingly beat 18th-ranked Denis Shapovalov in an abbreviated set, and then also made his ATP debut last week with a win over Felix Auger-Aliassime. Balanced Oscar Otte.
