A Ubisoft Quebec employee explained the aspects that were taken into consideration when designing the map.
Ubisoft's summer promotion, Ubisoft Forward, has come to an end, with the French company telling us about Assassin's Creed Shadows coming in November accompanied by a stunning preview of the game. Within the trailer, we also saw the two controllable characters, Jasuke and Naoé, in action – the former will focus on direct combat, and the latter on silent murders and stealth.
The developers have already told us a little about whether Ubisoft expects players in Shadows to have a larger map than Assassin's Creed's Valhalla. At the time, Jonathan Dumont, the game's creative director, strongly hinted that the scope of the action set in feudal Japan would be closer to that of 2017's Origins.
After Ubisoft Forward, Ubisoft Quebec employee Simon Lemay Comtois sat down to talk VGCWith whom he confirmed that Shadows will indeed be smaller than Valhalla – and also talked about the walkable area being as large as in Origins – he then shared more details about that.
He said they were not aiming to cover all of Japan, although they could have done so given the country's relatively small size.
“The story we're focusing on is mostly centered around central Japan, so we didn't cover the entire country, so we already knew roughly how much we wanted to expand. So something important is happening in Kyoto, something important is happening in Osaka, Azuchi — we need those places.” …”
– said Comtois.

He continued:
“We built huge castles and then thought about how much open world we needed in between for it to feel authentic and the players felt that navigating between them without having to ride for days to get from one castle to another was an adventure. It's really cool. It's hard to do, but in the end we found “The correct proportions between cities and castles we wanted to display, so that it justifies the size of our world map.”
Set in feudal Japan, Assassin's Creed Shadows will be released on November 15, 2024 for PC, Mac, iPad, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
