In 2023, EU member states exported 502 billion euros worth of goods to the United States, while the value of imports reached 344 billion euros, which means a surplus of 158 billion euros from the EU's point of view – Report to Eurostat.
The United States is thus the EU's number one goods export partner, accounting for 19.7 percent of total non-EU exports, and the second largest goods import partner after China, with 13.7 percent of total imports from third countries.
Between 2013 and 2023, the foreign trade balance between the EU and the United States tilted towards the Union every year, with the smallest surplus being €81 billion in 2013, and the largest being €166 billion in 2021.
Crude oil was the most valuable commodity imported from the United States in 2023 (€42.4 billion), representing an 11.4 percent increase compared to €38.0 billion the previous year.
Medicines and pharmaceutical products are the second most imported group of goods from the New World. The value of imports in this category reached 32.5 billion euros in 2023, an increase of 36.6 percent over the previous year.
The “bronze” American product was natural gas (liquefied or gaseous), of which 26.9 billion euros were delivered to Europe. This figure is 44.8 percent lower than the €48.7 billion in 2022, which can only be attributed to the strong decline in prices – volume increased by 14 percent.
