The Baltic Sea is not in good condition. It is very hot, and a lot of nutrients have been added that do not belong to it, the main source of which is the excessive fertilization prevalent in agriculture. This is also the reason why fish do not get enough oxygen. In one particularly beautiful place, the Vejle Fjord in Denmark, the sea has almost become extinct. When avid fisherman Lasse Mikkelsen sets sail, he knows for sure that he can’t expect a big catch. Video from Deutsche Welle.
Wildlife in the Baltic Sea is also affected by climate change. To compensate for the harmful effects of human activity, volunteer divers are planting seaweed in northern Germany, near Kiel. Divers with hand shovels free them and place the seaweed shoots in yellow bags, to replant them the next day on an empty patch of seabed a little further away. This practice may seem strange at first, but it’s not the only program seeking to restore underwater seagrass meadows. Germany’s GEOMAR initiative is unique in that it entrusts the transfer of seaweed to local volunteers, who can thus contribute to the fight against climate change.
