The best pizzeria in Europe is in Spain, but…

If it's pizza, it's Italy, right? What if I said that the best pizzeria in Spain? It's weird, but I'll explain. There is a global guide to pizza, 50 Pizzas Made by Italians. Every year, a thousand of their anonymous inspectors visit our continent, taste the pizza, and then use their experience to compile a rating, listing the best cuisines. The ranking this year was as follows:

I'm following you!

1: Sartoria Panatieri: Barcelona, Spain

2:BEST: Copenhagen, Denmark

3:50 Callow: London, United Kingdom

4: Via Toledo Inubizzeria: Vienna, Austria

5: Zulu Pizza: Fürth, Germany

6: Fratelli Figorato: Madrid, Spain

7: Forza: Helsinki, Finland

8: Naples on the road: London, UK

9: NIA: Amsterdam, Netherlands

10: La Palmessina: Barcelona, Spain

In other words, three of the top ten are Spanish, two are English, and none are Italian. This is possible because the creators of 50 Top Pizza do not compete with their own countries. More precisely, it is compared, but it is a separate competition, as only Italian pizza makers are included, while all other European countries are put in another hat. Who knows, maybe this is also a subtle indicator that real Italian pizza is on another level?

But let's talk about the winner: Sartoria Panatieri from Barcelona is managed by two people: Rafa Panatieri and Jorge Sastre. The former is of Italian descent, but was born in Brazil, and originally graduated as a veterinarian, but became a chef instead, working as a chef in South America and Italy. In Barcelona, he also worked in the kitchen of the Michelin-starred restaurant Nectari before opening his own pizzeria. They also offer award-winning pizzas called Salsa de tomatos Cherry asados and mozzarella y holandesa de albahaca, made in a wood-fired oven, with mozzarella, roasted cherry tomatoes and Dutch basil on a tomato base for 4,800 forints.

According to the jury, the most popular remains Neapolitan-style pizza – that is, a thin, crispy dish with a thick edge at the edges. But they are not specifically looking for that. Food can be of any style, as long as it is themed and delicious, and it does not matter that the place in which it is served is friendly and pleasant.
