The Financial Times quoted an unnamed Western official as saying that US President Joe Biden may agree to change the status of Ukraine's application for NATO membership before he leaves office in January 2025. President Joe Biden will meet representatives of Ukraine and its allies in Germany on October 12. This reportedly became known after Zelensky and Biden's meetings in the United States Ukrainian Pravda.
A Western official briefed on Zelensky's talks in Washington said there were early indications that Biden might agree to move forward with Ukraine's bid to join NATO before he leaves office in January.“
The official said.
Zelensky, who left the United States over the weekend, said a decision would come in October.
President Joe Biden publicly supports Ukraine's membership in NATO, but has so far resisted active moves to bring Ukraine closer together, such as a call to join the alliance. NATO membership remains a key goal for Ukraine, but very few of the alliance's 32 members believe that is possible without a complete and permanent ceasefire and a clear line on a map designating the amount of Ukrainian territory covered by the alliance's mutual protection clause.
