The Chinese president welcomed Bill Gates as an old friend

Donate $50 million

Gates’ meeting with the leader of the world’s second-largest economy came a day after his family foundation pledged $50 million to Chinese research into medicines and treatments for “infectious diseases that disproportionately affect the world’s poorest countries, such as tuberculosis and malaria.” Microsoft has a very influential research lab in China for decades.

Gates’ trip to China fits in with recent visits by global business leaders. Last month, CEOs of Tesla (TSLA), JPMorgan (JPM), and Starbucks (SBUX) visited China, where they met government ministers and government officials. This includes Apple (AAPL), Samsung (SSNLF), Aramco, and Volkswagen (VLKAF) has followed similar flights by its leaders in recent months.
