The Czech Republic and Canada were tied after the second period in their quarterfinal match at the 2024 World Junior Championships.
Matthew Wood scored the opening goal of the second period to put Canada ahead as he raced in behind the Czech defense to beat goaltender Michael Hrabal with assists from Easton Cowan and Brayden Jagr.
Defenseman Jake Furlong scored the equalizer late in the period to make it 2-2 after receiving a pass from Matthew Poitras and his shot from the point went past Hrabal.
In the first half, Czech winger Jakub Stankel opened the scoring in just under eight minutes when he received a pass from Dominik Raymond and beat Canadian goalkeeper Matjís Rousseau on the blocking side.
Stancl plays in Sweden with Vaxjo and was drafted in the fourth round (106th overall) by St. Louis. Louis Blues in the 2023 NHL Draft.
Minutes later, Raymond was awarded a penalty kick after being hit by Canadian Noah Warren, but Rousseau stepped up and blocked the ball.
The Czechs doubled their lead late in the period as Tomas Cibulka's shot from the blue line through traffic beat Rousseau through the fifth hole. Jiri Kulic had the assist on goal.
