The European Union has made a big announcement: billions of new euros can flow in, and the ceiling on the Peace Framework has been raised

The purpose of the resolution is to ensure the long-term financial sustainability and predictability of the peace movement. The Peace Framework was created in order to ensure that the EU can quickly prevent and respond to conflicts.

Josep Borrell, High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy of the Union, said:

Today’s decision will ensure the provision of the financial background to continue providing tangible military support to the armed forces of our partners. Since the Peace Framework was established in 2021, this has already been the second increase in its funding.

The statement states that with today’s addition, the total fiscal ceiling (at current prices) exceeds €12 billion, and adds: The decision is a clear political signal that the EU is permanently committed to military support to Ukraine and its other partners.

The European Peace Facility was established in March 2021 to finance all measures of the Common Foreign and Security Policy related to military and defense issues, aimed at preventing conflicts, maintaining peace and strengthening international security and stability. The Peace Framework enables the EU to finance measures aimed at strengthening the resources of non-EU states and regional and international organizations relevant to military and defense issues.

The Peace Framework is not part of the EU budget.

It started with a general fiscal ceiling of €5.5 billion (at current prices) for the period 2021-2027, which was raised to approximately €8 billion (at current prices) on March 13, 2023. Member states’ contributions are determined on the basis of a key GNI distribution.

The statement states that thanks to the Peace Framework, the European Union has so far supported the Armed Forces of Ukraine with seven successive funding packages, in addition to Mozambique, Georgia, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Somalia and Lebanon.
