Albin has signed with Pierre Gasly for 2023 to replace departed Fernando Alonso.
The French driver was already able to try himself at Red Bull, but in the six months he competed alongside Max Verstappen, he has performed poorly. The bulls brought him back to Toro Rosso (AlphaTauri), where the 26-year-old rider thrived again.
He won the 2020 Italian Grand Prix with the Faenza stable, and on top of that he was able to stand on the podium several times. But with the signing of Sergio Perez, the Austrian team closed the door in his face, so new alternatives had to be sought.
After the two-time world champion picks Aston Martin next year, there will be a vacancy at Alpine. The French team first announced the signing of Oscar Piastre, but they had already agreed with McLaren in July. The Australian also announced that he would not compete in Alpine, so the team turned to the Formula 1 Contract Review Organization.
Gasly and Albin had already held talks with each other, and after it became clear that Piastre was not an option, the parties signed the contract. As part of this, he leaves Red Bull to the French driver entirely, they don’t just loan him to the blue team.
Team boss Otmar Szafnauer also revealed that the contract is not for one year, so we will certainly see the entire French squad in Formula 1 until 2024.
