The Moscow Times reported that the Russian Defense Ministry deleted Sergei Surovikin’s biography. The Russian general was officially relieved of all his duties a few days ago, and he had already disappeared from the ministry’s leadership list. Surovikin was the supreme commander of the Russian Air Force and deputy commander of the invasion forces against Ukraine.
The “General Armageddon”‘s crime was that he might have been involved in some way in the Wagner Rebellion of June. According to the Moscow Times, it was the case that he “acted very independently” during the uprising, but it will probably never be clear what exactly he did.
The Russian Defense Ministry has removed all traces of Surovikin from its website, leaving only one video of him calling on the rebel Wagner Group’s mercenaries to surrender.
Sergey Surovikin played a key role in organizing the lines of defense that Ukrainian forces had been struggling to break through for months. Russian soldiers called the huge defense system that was being built in the southern part of Ukraine the “Sorovikin Line”.
And though Surovikin will very likely be remembered in Russian history as a disgraced person rather than a national hero, the general was seen alive and walking freely with his wife on the streets of a Russian city on Tuesday.
