The Hungarians deliberately slowed down the game offensively, played patient handball, and although they made some mistakes, they took the lead in the 13th minute. As it turned out, this was the only time László Sótonyi had the advantage. The national coach had to call time as quickly as possible, because in the 21st minute the home team was two goals better, as he took advantage of his opponent’s mistakes well. The Hungarian team had problems in attack, and superior movements were not successful either.
The Germans already led 14-11 at the end of the first half, and it was only five minutes into the second half when Suttoni called time again and then changed goalkeepers, because the German team was still better. The young Hungarian team came back from three goals down from -6, but they could not get close to their opponent, because David Spath continued to defend brilliantly. His team took the game 5-1, which it eventually won by seven hits.
David Spath made 44 percent saves (39/17), and on the Hungarian side, Christoph Palaszcz made eight saves, and Christian Meckler made one save. After a silver medal in 1977 and a bronze in 2005, the Hungarians won the medal for the third time at the U21 World Championships.
