Italy has become the first country in the European Union to say no to the production and distribution of so-called processed meat and products derived from it, with a vote held, Thursday, in the lower house of the Romanian Parliament.

According to the International Trade Movement article, the House of Representatives adopted the law bearing the name of Agriculture Minister Francisco Lollobrigida by a majority of 159 votes to 53 votes, with 34 abstentions.

The Coldiretti Small Producers Association was one of the first to call for a ban on meat grown in a laboratory from stem cells. This question has sparked serious political controversy in recent years, and voting on the law was not without tension.

During the vote, members of Coldiretti and politicians from the Europe+ party, led by President Benedetto della Vedova, protested in front of the Chamber of Deputies. +Europe demonstrators declared that opponents of artificial meat “sow ignorance, and banning artificial meat is anti-science and anti-Italian.”

Coldiretti stressed that food in Italy is an integral part of culture and tradition, and that protecting high-quality products is a priority.

Among the other demonstrators, Coldiretti’s president, Ettore Brandini, spoke first to Benedetto Dalla Vedova, and then they began to push each other. Police intervention calmed the tension.
