The first trailer for Woman King is here and it looks like it’s only 300 with African women instead of Spartan men. Jenna Prince-Bethwood tells the story of the Dahomey Amazons (also known as Agojie), or the notorious female warriors of West Africa, who were active until the beginning of the 20th century, with Academy Award winner Viola Davis in the lead role.
For this role, Davis trained four hours a day five times a week, learning martial arts, sprinting, weightlifting, and receiving weapons training to use a machete. The trailer doesn’t reveal many details, but it’s packed with amazing fight scenes that really remind you of the 300.
All that can be known is that the film deals with the history of the state of Dahomey (today the territory of Benin), which was one of the most powerful African states in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Based on the trailer, the story may begin with the colonization of white colonists, but it is not known how long it extends, as the Agojie has been active for hundreds of years.
