The new Sony phone has a much better zoom camera than the Galaxy S24 Ultra

Sony's new flagship model, the Xperia 1 VI, has arrived and will soon be here. Unfortunately, the phone has lost two of its unique features, one is the ultra-long aspect ratio of 21:9, and the other is the 4K display resolution, but the 3.5mm jack remains, and the camera has also been improved, especially the periscope module, which is capable of optical zoom. Much larger than its predecessor, superior to many competing devices.

Last year's model from Sony, the Xperia 1 V, got a periscope camera with a variable zoom range of 85-125mm. Compared to the 24mm main unit, this means 3.5-5.2x optical zoom, i.e. the maximum value roughly corresponds to what the currently most popular Android phone Galaxy S24 Ultra can do (the 111mm camera here is the advertised 5x optical It is labeled as zoom, but the exact value is 4.6x, rounded up).

So, on paper, the Sony was slightly better in terms of zoom, if only because of the variable focus distance, but the newly announced Xperia 1 VI is better. The new zoom range is 85-170mm, meaning a maximum optical zoom of 7.1x.

The other cameras haven't changed significantly, the sensors remain the same, but there are software improvements.

Sony also made other innovations, the display (lower resolution) received a more advanced LTPO OLED panel, which is able to provide higher brightness and dynamically variable image refresh (1-120 Hz). The speakers have also improved, and we also get the current Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor.
