Abandoned cars, proximity to nature, antiques – these three words best describe America’s oldest abandoned junkyard, which is now referred to as a tourist attraction around the world. The site can still be visited today, and its atmosphere evokes memories of the past. How can a junk yard be an attraction? To understand the passion of the place, stay with us!
The story of the old car city
The Scrapyard of America was founded in 1931 as a family business and remains in the hands of the same family today. The owner, Walter Dean Lewis, wanted to continue his parents’ legacy, so he kept it.
This place used to sell spare parts, and now it has only been used as an attraction since Walter stopped selling cars and spare parts 6 years ago. Since then, it has served as a museum, where we can see how cars combine with nature, and trees and plants emerge from the cars, providing a wonderful sight.
the site
This place is the largest classic junkyard in the world. It is located in Georgia, near White City, off Highway 411. It has an area of 34 hectares, and a winding 10 km long road passes through it. There are more than 4,500 wrecks at the site, so the place can tell us a lot about the past.
time travel
This place is visited by crowds of photographers and car enthusiasts, but civilians also walk around, because for those who love antiques, it is a wonderful experience, a real time travel. The cars all date back to before 1972, with the oldest example dating back to 1918.
You can also see the brands, many of which no longer exist.
Here you can find the following brands: Packard, DeSoto, Studebaker, Kaiser, Hudson, Ford, Edsel, Mercury, Lincoln, Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile, Cadillac, Plymouth, Dodge, Chrysler, Nashi and some foreign cars.
The location is also ideal for wedding photos, which is probably why 95 percent of visitors are photographers. Admission is $25 for photographers and $15 for other visitors.
