The Ukrainian president, in response to Moscow’s recognition of the two splinter “people’s republics” in southeastern Ukraine, said: “We believe that this was an escalating step, legal aggression that laid the basis for military aggression by Russia and neighboring militias. The temporarily occupied Ukrainian lands.”
