“Beautifying my resume is my crime. I’m sorry,” he told the newspaper. He does not consider himself a criminal and insists on serving his term in Congress despite the incident.

The case was first reported in the New York Times last week. Even then, via his lawyer, he told the public that it was defamation and called the news about his past a series of unworthy attacks.

In the campaign, he claimed he was an employee of Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, later explaining that he “didn’t work directly with any of the companies” and was unhappy with the matter.

He also admitted that he did not go to college, although he previously claimed that he graduated from Baruch College in New York in 2010. “I don’t have any higher education. I’m sorry. We all do stupid things in life,” he added.

His Democratic opponent, Robert Zimmerman, tweeted that after Santos admitted he lied, the Justice Department should remove him.
