Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced on Tuesday that he had formally asked the House Oversight Committee to open an investigation that could ultimately lead to impeachment proceedings against US President Joe Biden. McCarthy launched the investigation even though they have not yet been able to prove allegations that President Biden directly benefited from his son Hunter Biden’s foreign business deals. CNN.
Since January, the House of Representatives, which has a Republican majority, has identified the investigation into Hunter Biden’s dealings as one of its main goals for the next two years. If the investigation leads to impeachment proceedings, the charges must be debated in the House of Representatives in the 100-member Senate, and at the end of the proceedings senators will vote on whether to convict the president.
According to Kevin McCarthy, the Oversight Committee’s investigation since January has exposed a “culture of corruption” around the Biden family, due in part to the time Joe Biden was vice president during Barack Obama’s presidency, MTI wrote. “There are allegations of abuse of power, obstruction, and corruption, which warrant further investigation by the House. That is why I today directed the House Oversight Committee to open an investigation into President Joe Biden.”
A White House spokesman described the launch of the investigation in Congress as a politically motivated move. According to Ian Sims, Kevin McCarthy capitulated to “far-right extremist members of the Republican caucus who are threatening to cripple the budget if they don’t get a baseless, evidence-free impeachment.”
The measure now underway gives the House Oversight Committee broader powers than before to request documents as part of the investigation. Republican Representative James Comer, Chairman of the Board of Directors, submitted a formal request to the State Department on Tuesday, requesting documents related to Joe Biden’s activities as Vice President, especially regarding measures aimed at eliminating corruption in Ukraine.
Viktor Sokin, the prosecutor general of Ukraine who was ousted in 2016, recently gave an interview to US media in which he said that Petro Poroshenko, at the instigation of then-Ukrainian President Joe Biden, removed him from office because he was investigating a corruption case. Corruption was implicated in Burisma Energy, of which Joe Biden’s son Hunter was a board member.
