For three days from June 23, it will be all about flowers in Szőreg, the rose-growing castle in Hungary, where the Szreg Rose Festival will take place for the 23rd time – the organizers have informed MTI.
One of the most popular programs every year is a visit to the rose fields.
This year, András Bata Nursery School and Hegedűs Fruit and Ornamental Nursery School will open the Rose Fields to visitors, where more than a million flowering rose trees can be seen.
Rose fields can be visited both individually and organized. This year, for the first time, visitors can return home from the field of roses at Kocsis Flóra Kft. With cut roses.
The exhibitions organized on the occasion of the holiday each year cover a different theme, this year there will be an exhibition on the relationship between roses and art at the István Tömörkeny Cultural Center, but there will also be a show of cut roses.
On Fridays and Saturdays, cultural programmes, concerts, dance performances and theatrical performances await those coming to the Rose Festival in Sándor Monti Park. Organized by András Monostori Tourist Guides, guests can tour Szőreg and learn about its past and present.
One of the most exciting programs is the Rose Festival parade on the evening of June 24, in which about sixty horse-drawn carriages, carts, cars, vintage cars, tractors and other vehicles, small and large, participate.
Hundreds of thousands of flowers were provided by rose growers in and around the reg for decoration and a shower of rose petals accompanying the vines. In the evening, after the show, the Ornamental Plant Gardener of the Year Award and the Szőregért Medal will be presented here.
During the weekends, the lavender crop, which has become popular in recent years, awaits guests in Szőre. On the last day, on June 25, sports play the main role, in the Szőreg Rose Run, applicants can run three distances, and those who choose the half marathon can test their endurance among the blooming roses.
Rose cultivation in Sőreg dates back more than a hundred years, and has traditions unique to the country. Farming, which requires a lot of work and expertise, is usually done on family farms.
In and around Szőregen, roses are grown in fifty plants on an area of about 170 hectares, and this work means a living for many.
Thanks to the experience and know-how handed down through generations and the microclimate favorable to rose cultivation, the stem roses grown in the Szőreg region are of high quality and demanded throughout Europe. The potting soil between Tisza and Maros is particularly favorable for growing roses, which is why 90-92 percent of the 4.5-5 million rose plants produced annually in Hungary come from this region.
In appreciation of this, in 2012 the rozsát of Sőreg was included in the Register of Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications under the protection of the European Union, and in 2020 it became Hungarian.
The Szőregi Rose Festival was first organized in 1999 as a tribute to gardeners who carry on the tradition.
